چکیده

Wildlife repellents can be part of non-lethal management strategies to reduce the negative impacts wildlife property, agricultural production, and human health safety. Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are associated with in all three these areas. Anthraquinone is a useful avian repellent its utility as mammalian still being explored. Our objective was evaluate laboratory efficacy an anthraquinone-based for raccoons using different concentrations. We fed captive whole corn treated at 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% 2% anthraquinone examined their behavioral response related feeding repellency including consumption change duration approach, interaction extended feed bowl. Feeding 26–37% 0.5–1.5% 71% anthraquinone. Interaction among treatments varied (p = 0.005) longer food bowl compared 0.5% However, addition did not significantly alter behaviors interaction, or between pretreatment treatment within treatments. The decreases that we observed warrant development further research field evaluation regarding deterrent repel vertebrate competitors from raccoon specific baits.

Clinical coccidiosis in raccoons (Procyon lotor).

Clinical coccidiosis was diagnosed in wild-caught and captive raccoons. Eimeria procyonis-like oocysts were seen in 15 of 15 captive raccoons. In 6 of 6 juvenile wild-caught raccoons examined at necropsy, endogenous coccidian stages were seen in the small intestine. Two types of schizonts (large and small) were identified. Large schizonts were up to 110 microm long, contained 10-microm-long mer...

Experimental infection of raccoons (Procyon lotor) with West Nile virus.

To characterize the responses of raccoons to West Nile virus (WNV) infection, we subcutaneously exposed them to WNV. Moderately high viremia titers (≤ 10(4.6) plaque forming units [PFU]/mL of serum) were noted in select individuals; however, peak viremia titers were variable and viremia was detectable in some individuals as late as 10 days post-inoculation (DPI). In addition, fecal shedding was...

Neuroaxonal dystrophy in raccoons (Procyon lotor) from Iowa.

During a 12-month period (1998-1999), microscopic evidence of neuroaxonal dystrophy (NAD) in medullae oblongata of raccoons (Procyon lotor) was observed in 17/39 (47% prevalence in adults) from Iowa, USA. Three of the animals were kits (<3 months), 26 were between 1 and 2 years, and 10 were over 7 years. Lesions were not seen in the medullae of the 3 kits. In young adults, the lesions were mild...

Baylisascaris procyonis in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in eastern Tennessee.

Raccoon (Procyon lotor) carcasses (n=118) were collected from July through December 2007 throughout eastern Tennessee. Necropsies were performed, and Baylisascaris procyonis was collected from the gastrointestinal tract of infected carcasses. Prevalence rates were determined for the overall sample population, males and females, and adults and juveniles. The sample population had a B. procyonis ...

Seasonal changes in spermatogenesis and peripheral testosterone concentration in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in Hokkaido.

Feral raccoons (Procyon lotor) have been increasing in number since 1979 and are currently subject to pest control in Hokkaido. One of the reasons for the increase in numbers is thought to be the high reproductive potential of raccoons, but little is known about their reproduction. The main aim of this study was to clarify seasonal changes in spermatogenesis and peripheral testosterone concentr...
